Short answer: In an 8 week old puppy schedule, sleep runs her day. Puppies usually sleep 18 to 20 hours a day, in naps of 30 minutes to two hours.
Feed four small meals. Take her out each time she wakes, eats or plays, and at least every two hours she’s awake.
Two days home, and she naps on any lap, nips ankles before dinner and cries at 2 a.m. Everyone in the house has a different idea of what she needs, too.
Leave her day unplanned, and naps get skipped. Too much stimulation and exhaustion can lead to “unfortunate behavior,” the AKC warns.

What does an 8 week old puppy schedule look like?
Here is one example of an 8 week old puppy routine, with clock times. Slide every time to match when she wakes.
| Time | What she does |
|---|---|
| 7:00 a.m. | Straight out to potty, then breakfast. Bowl up after 15 minutes, then out again. |
| 7:45 a.m. | 30 to 60 minutes of play and exploring |
| 8:45 a.m. | Potty, then a nap (30 minutes to two hours) |
| 10:45 a.m. | Potty on waking, lunch, potty, then up to an hour of play |
| 12:30 p.m. | Potty, then a nap |
| 2:30 p.m. | Potty on waking, her third meal, then out again |
| 3:30 p.m. | Potty, then a nap before dinner |
| 5:30 p.m. | Potty, dinner or a stuffed chew in her crate, then potty again |
| 6:00 p.m. | Family time and gentle play |
| 7:30 p.m. | Water bowl up, two and a half hours before bed |
| 8:00 p.m. | Potty, then a quiet evening |
| 10:00 p.m. | A quick potty trip, then her crate for the night |

That’s about a dozen trips before bed.

What if you work nights or odd hours?
A story from Michael Northcutt, our founder: A friend of mine works nights at a hospital. She gets home at 8 a.m., sleeps until three and starts all over again. Then she got a puppy, a little boy.
Every guide she read was written for people who sleep at night. Her morning was everyone else’s afternoon. The first week, she followed the normal schedule anyway, and it broke her. As a result, she slept about four hours a day. The puppy, meanwhile, chewed through a baseboard.
So she took a blank piece of paper and wrote her own clock across the top. Wake up at three, leave at seven, home at eight, sleep at nine. Then she fit the puppy around her life.
A big walk and play when she woke. Training and dinner before work. A dog walker at midnight, and a neighbor at four on weekdays. At 8 a.m., potty, breakfast and a frozen chew in the crate. Finally, she taped it to the fridge and gave the walker and neighbor a copy.
It took about two weeks for him to adjust, but now he sleeps when she sleeps, and wags at her 3 p.m. alarm like it’s morning.
Your own puppy’s clock can bend the same way. Write your hours across the top first, then slide her 8 week old puppy schedule under them.
How much should an 8 week old puppy sleep?
Most of her day is sleep, usually 18 to 20 hours of it. That sleep also helps build her brain, nervous system, immune system and muscles. She may nap every hour or so, for 30 minutes to two hours.

Give her a safe nap spot and quiet time after play, then leave her alone while she sleeps. You don’t want her to need you to fall asleep (AKC), after all.
Why is she so bitey before dinner?
If she nips ankles in the late afternoon, she may not need more play. In fact, a biting puppy is sometimes really an overtired puppy who needs a nap in a quiet space or crate.
That’s why the nap before dinner is worth guarding. When the teeth come out anyway, the AKC suggests:
- Swap your hand for a chew toy. Keep one within reach.
- Make biting end the game. Turn away quietly. Yelling can count as a reward.
- Give her a calm time-out. Settle her in her crate, never as punishment.
Tip: When play turns wild, try her sleep spot before more games. That’s because guiding an overtired puppy to her crate helps her wind down.
Guarding that nap gets harder when several people share her day.
How many times a day should an 8 week old puppy eat?
Most puppies this age do well on four small meals a day. If she freezes or stiffens over the bowl, our guide to food aggression in puppies walks through what to do. That’s the AKC’s usual guide from 6 to 12 weeks, and PetMD allows three to four under 3 months.

“Smaller, more frequent meals will help manage your puppy’s fast metabolism.”
Amanda Ardente, DVM, PhD, veterinarian, writing for PetMD
VCA’s 2 to 3 measured meals a day is for all ages. So at 8 weeks, pick three or four, keep the times fixed, and let your vet adjust.
Fixed meal times in an 8 week old puppy schedule bring steadier potty times, since puppies usually go soon after eating. Also pick the bowl up after 15 minutes to discourage picky habits.
How much should an 8 week old puppy eat?
Portions go by her body condition, not by what she finishes. The chart on the bag often isn’t accurate, PetMD notes, so ask your vet for her amount.
When does an 8 week old puppy need to go out?
Take her out after every wake-up, meal, drink and play session, and at least every two hours while she’s awake. That’s how often to go. However, how long she can hold it is a different number.
A normal stretch is about 1 hour per month of age, so about 2 hours at 8 weeks. In contrast, age in months plus one hour is the outer limit, about 3 hours at this age.
Trip times by age live on our puppy potty training schedule. For the full method, see how to potty train a puppy.
Tip: Set a phone alarm for two hours after each wake-up.
Doing that math every time she wakes gets old by day two.
Where should an 8 week old puppy nap: crate or pen?
A crate or a pen both work if the spot is safe, quiet and hers. Humane World also suggests a room where the family spends time.

A cheap soft blanket beats an expensive bed she’ll chew, the AKC says. But skip wool, which shreds into strings that can choke. Our crate training guide walks through the first steps.
What should a puppy’s first night home look like?
Her first night goes easier close to you, in a quiet, dim room. The AKC and Humane World agree:
- Wind down first. Play, cuddle and a potty trip. Lift the water bowl about two and a half hours before bed.
- Crate in your bedroom or a nearby hallway, so you hear her whine.
- Bring a smell of home, like a blanket that smells like her mom.
How many night trips should you expect?
Most puppies can sleep about seven hours without a bathroom break, by Humane World’s count. That figure is for night sleep. Her 3-hour limit, on the other hand, is for daytime crate time. A puppy this young may not manage it yet, and night trips are normal.
Carry her out calmly, praise her quietly and put her straight back. If she cries, wait several minutes. If it keeps going, say her potty word, and if she perks up, take a short, boring trip. Never punish whining. If the crying looks like panic, read our guide to dog anxiety in the crate.
Where do short training moments fit in an 8 week old puppy’s day?
In an 8 week old puppy schedule, short sessions slot in between naps. A printed schedule belongs in every puppy starter kit. VCA’s behaviorists suggest no more than a few minutes at first, several times a day.
- Start with her name. Say it, then reward her for moving toward you.
- Stop when she fades. A tired, over-excited or scared puppy can’t learn well.
- Meet the world gently. Her socialization window runs from 7 to 14 weeks.
8 week old puppy schedule FAQ
How long can an 8 week old puppy stay in a crate?
About 3 hours at most, by the months-plus-one rule above. Humane World caps puppies under 6 months at three or four hours. Build up slowly, from about 10 minutes after a meal to 30 calm minutes before you leave her.
When can she go outside before her shots?
Your own backyard is generally safe if no sick animals have been there in the past year, PetMD’s vets say. Keep her off public ground and away from unknown dogs until two weeks after her final core shots. Those usually finish at or after 16 weeks, so carry her to see the world until then. Deciding on cover before those vet visits? Our is pet insurance worth it for a puppy guide runs the math on one emergency.
Why does my 8 week old puppy bite so much?
Play biting is completely normal and necessary for development, the AKC says. “Play biting does not mean your puppy is vicious,” says Dr. Jerry Klein, the AKC’s chief veterinarian. If it hasn’t eased by 6 months, he suggests an experienced trainer or behavior specialist.
What should the first week with a new puppy look like?
Expect lots of sleep, some night waking and frequent accidents that drop as she learns a routine. Toilet training a puppy typically takes 4 to 6 months, Humane World says.
How we made this guide: In October 2026 we read AKC, Humane World, PetMD and VCA pages. The example day uses only their numbers. Nobody at LoveMyPuppy is a veterinarian. Ask your vet about anything that worries you.
