Puppy just came home? Start with the First 14 Days Kit

Some days you’ll wonder what happened to your sweet puppy

The first two weeks are about settling in. Then your puppy gets braver, bitier and busier. Vet visits stack up. Teeth fall out on the rug.

Around month 5, plenty of owners quietly wonder if they made a mistake. Hands covered in little bruises. A puppy who forgot everything she knew last week. Two steps forward, one step back. Call it the 4-month dip.

A shared plan helps your household respond consistently and keep notes for your vet or qualified trainer. It does not promise how quickly this stage will pass.

This plan maps out every week from 12 to 26. You always know what to do next, and what can wait. And for the weeks that go backwards, page 17 tells you what to do while it passes, and when to call your vet.

Try this tonight, free. If the biting spikes around dinner, ask one question before you play harder: “When did she last sleep?” Plenty of owners notice the biting gets worse when a puppy is overtired. A quiet nap in her pen with a chew may do more for your evening than another game of tug.

What the next 3 months look like

Three stages. One plan the whole house follows through all of them.

  • A vet checks a 3-month-old puppy while the owner holds the vet tracker
Weeks 12 to 16Shots and safe outings

Track each vaccine and deworming. Socialize safely before the shots are done, with a weekly exposure plan.

  • A tiny baby puppy tooth on a paper towel beside the weekly mouth check page
Weeks 17 to 21Teeth and the land shark

Know what’s normal while teeth fall out. Calm the evening biting with a simple plan everyone at home follows.

  • A 5-month-old puppy naps in its crate while the owner works from home
Weeks 22 to 26Alone time and real life

Build alone time step by step. Daily schedules for 4, 5 and 6 months fit your puppy around your workday.

You can, and you should. The AKC, ASPCA and VCA write good advice, and this plan is built on it. The difference is what you do with it at 7 p.m. when the puppy is hanging off a sleeve.

From Dr. Michael Northcutt’s house

“We thought she needed more exercise. She needed a nap.”

Every evening, right about when we sat down to eat, our sweet little puppy turned into somebody else. All day she was cuddly. Then seven o’clock hit and she was hanging off my sleeve. Grabbing pant legs. Running laps around the couch with her eyes a little wild and her teeth on everything.

My first thought was the one most people have. She’s got too much energy. Let’s tire her out.

So we played harder. Longer tug. More fetch down the hallway. One more lap around the block.

It got worse.

The night it clicked, I was on the living room rug with a tug toy, getting nipped for the fifth time. My forearm had little red dots on it. Somebody on the couch looked up from their plate and asked, “When did she last sleep?”

We looked at each other. Nobody knew.

We thought back. She’d been awake since lunch. Guests in and out. Kids home from school. TV on. Every time she started to doze, someone said “aww” and picked her up.

So we tried something new. We stopped the game. Calm voice. Quick potty trip. Then into her pen with a chew, lights low, and we walked away.

She was asleep in about four minutes. Out cold for almost two hours. The house was so quiet I could hear the fridge hum.

Was that a magic fix for mouthing? No. Puppies mouth. It’s normal, and teaching a soft mouth takes time and patience. But it showed us that a lot of what we called “bad behavior” was really “missed nap.”

After that we started writing nap times on a sheet on the fridge. Just two columns: up at, down at. When the “up” stretch got long, we could see the evening storm coming before it hit.

That little sheet didn’t stop every nip. It just turned seven o’clock from a surprise into something we could see coming.

If the mouthing ever looks hard, stiff, or scary, that’s a moment for your vet or a qualified trainer. For the everyday land shark hour, though, our fridge sheet did more than another game of tug ever did.

Questions before you buy

Is this a physical product?

No. It’s a digital download. You get it right after checkout.

My puppy is only 8 to 11 weeks old. Is it too early?

No. The First 14 Days Kit covers the first two weeks, and this plan picks up at week 12. Fill in the vet and vaccine tracker now. Then the booster dates are on paper before you need them.

My puppy is already 4 months old. Is it too late?

No. Every section is marked by weeks of age. Start on the week your puppy is in today.

Does it cover potty training?

Yes. Potty trips are built into every daily schedule for 4, 5 and 6 months, from the first trip after waking to the last one before bed. Page 14 also explains how long your puppy can usually hold it at each age.

How is this different from free articles or an app?

Free articles from the AKC, ASPCA and VCA are good, and this plan is built on them. They’re spread across dozens of pages, though. This puts that guidance in order, week by week, on paper the whole house can see. No app, no subscription.

I live alone. Is it still for me?

Yes. The plan works the same, with fewer handoffs. You still get the week-by-week map, the vet tracker, the schedules and the evening plan. If a dog walker, sitter or neighbor helps out, the fridge sheet tells them exactly what to do.

Can I fill it in on my phone or computer?

The PDF has fillable fields, and you can also print it. Use a PDF reader that supports saving form entries. Save a test copy and reopen it before relying on the file; phone browser previews do not always save changes. Sharing a file does not automatically sync later edits.

Will it stop the biting?

We won’t promise that. Every puppy is different. The plan gets everyone at home handling it the same way.
