Three things to get clear on

  1. Your out-of-pocket costs

Line up premiums, deductibles and reimbursement terms using the quotes you have.

  2. What the policy excludes

Keep waiting periods, exam fees and questions about your puppy’s health history together.

  3. How you would pay the vet

Look at what you could pay upfront and what you could set aside each month.

Before you get started

What should I have ready?

Have two or three quotes, your puppy’s age and breed, and an idea of what you could afford upfront. You can leave unknown items blank and ask the insurer.

Can I fill it in on my phone?

The PDF has fillable fields. Download it into a PDF reader that supports forms, then save a copy and reopen it to check your answers were saved. You can also print it.

Does this tell me which policy to buy?

No. It helps you organize quotes and questions. The right choice depends on your circumstances and the actual policy. LoveMyPuppy does not sell insurance.

Are pre-existing conditions always excluded?

Many policies exclude pre-existing conditions, but definitions and exceptions vary. Ask the insurer about symptoms, veterinary records and waiting periods, and get its answer in writing. Do not delay veterinary care to obtain insurance.

How do deductibles and reimbursement work?

The deductible is the amount you pay toward eligible costs before reimbursement under your policy. Ask whether it applies annually or per condition, and whether the insurer applies it before or after the reimbursement percentage. Excluded costs and policy limits can change the amount paid. The worksheet includes a fictional example of both calculation orders.

Is saving instead of insurance enough?

One affordable bill does not settle it. Consider larger or repeated bills, ongoing treatment and your budget. A savings fund can also cover deductibles and excluded costs alongside insurance. Accident-only policies generally leave illness costs to you.

Will insurance pay the vet directly?

Many policies reimburse you after you pay the vet. Direct payment depends on the insurer, the policy and the clinic. Check how you would cover the upfront bill.
