Shredded Hands, No Off Switch: Belgian Malinois Puppy Training

A Malinois puppy learns fast, bites hard and rarely settles on her own. Start with five to 10 minute sessions, tug with three rules, crate naps and a place mat, then check the honest fit questions breed experts ask.

Short answer: Belgian Malinois puppy training starts the day she comes home, in sessions of five to 10 minutes. Use food or toys, never force.

Give her drive a job with rules, like tug that stops when teeth touch skin. Then teach her to rest in her crate or on a mat.

Your forearms look like you lost a fight with a rosebush. You did fetch, training and tug. She still came for your ankles at 7 p.m.

That’s a normal week with a Malinois puppy.

What makes Belgian Malinois puppy training different?

Deny a Mal activity and company, the AKC breed page says, and you deprive him of his reasons for being.

Also, Mals are strongly interested in moving objects. However, without training, that can become chasing children, cars or other animals.

Why do people call them Maligators?

Purina says Mals are not nicknamed the ‘Maligator’ for nothing. They’re predisposed to guard and to bite, it adds. That doesn’t make your puppy dangerous. Instead, her mouth needs legal outlets and clear rules.

Are Belgian Malinois aggressive?

The AKC’s breed fit guide says Mals can be wary of strangers and territorial toward other animals. So early, extensive socialization helps limit aggressive tendencies toward new people.

Belgian Malinois puppy training, starting day one

Training can start as soon as she comes home, usually around 8 weeks, AKC says. Five minutes before breakfast and five before dinner is a real start.

1. Find what she’ll work for

Mals are usually very food oriented, very toy oriented, or both, Malinois.UK says. Purina calls them surprisingly sensitive, so use kind, reward-based training.

2. Make her name and “come” the best words she knows

In Belgian Malinois puppy training, call her often, just to hand over a treat. Pups around 8 to 10 weeks follow you like ducklings, Malinois.UK notes. In a fenced spot, jog away and praise her for following.

3. Socialize her, and book a puppy class

The American Belgian Malinois Club recommends a puppy kindergarten class. Also, ask how the trainer handles a mouthy herding pup. If she lunges to greet every dog on the path, pick which dogs she meets, and when.

4. Give her drive a job: tug with rules

Tug has rules she must follow while excited. Tufts University’s shelter dog program uses three tug rules.

  • Teeth never touch skin. Mouth on your hand ends the game.
  • She drops it when asked. Hold a treat at her nose, then pay her for letting go.
  • She waits for “take it.” Grabbing early makes the toy go dead.

Break a rule, and the toy goes away for at least a minute. Then tug in bursts of 15 seconds to a minute.

5. Build her off switch

Mals will need to be taught to relax, Purina says.

“Your dog should love going to their place.”

The AKC’s place cue starts small. Reward one paw on a mat, then all four. Add a release word and a down, then slowly add time. Hand out chews there.

Puppies usually sleep 18 to 20 hours a day, so follow active time with crate naps. Our crate training guide shows how to make it feel safe.

Belgian Malinois puppy biting: what works in training and what backfires

Littermates teach bite inhibition, a softer bite, with a yelp. You can too, says the AKC’s nipping guide.

  • Say a loud, high-pitched “Ow.” Praise or treat her the moment she backs off.
  • If that revs her up, go quiet. Turn away, walk off, or crate her for a few minutes with a chew.
  • Hand her a legal target. Keep toys within reach.
  • End the game if she keeps nipping. Biting shouldn’t earn more play.
  • Spot the overtired puppy. Guide her to her crate or bed to wind down.

Skip the rough stuff. After all, a Mal you try to force won’t like or respect you for it, Malinois.UK says.

When do Belgian Malinois stop biting?

For Belgian Malinois puppy training, know that teething usually starts between 3 and 4 months, and baby teeth should be gone by 6 months. In fact, Malinois.UK says Mals are usually very destructive up to around 2 years. Our 3 to 6 Month Puppy Plan maps weeks 12 to 26, teething guide included.

If she seems to bite out of aggression, not play, call a vet or trainer, AKC advises.

From Dr. Michael Northcutt, PhD, who builds our puppy kits: I sent our puppy to daycare so she’d come home tired. She came home a tornado.

She bit my sleeves, barked at the couch, and wouldn’t settle until 10 p.m.

A friend on a video call watched her zoom across my office. “She looks like a toddler after a birthday party,” my friend said. Toddlers after a birthday party aren’t tired. They’re overtired.

The daycare’s rest time was short, and my puppy liked to stay up and watch everyone.

So we changed it. Two half days a week instead of three full days. Daycare evenings got quiet on purpose. A short sniffy walk, dinner in a snuffle mat, a frozen chew in her pen. She comes home tired, the good kind.

If your Mal falls apart in the evening, look at her naps before you add more fetch.

Is a Belgian Malinois puppy right for you?

AKC says a Mal’s prey drive and energy don’t make her a good choice for first-time owners. If she’s home already, use these to aim your Belgian Malinois puppy training.

Honest fit questions, and what the experts say
QuestionWhat the experts sayIf your answer is no
Do you have time to train and socialize?Early exposure to people and dogs, plus classes (ABMC)Book a class now and plan short daily sessions
Is she home with you most of the day?Mals shouldn’t be left alone for long stretches (AKC)Line up a walker or sitter for midday
Are your kids older?Best with older, responsible kids, with supervision a must (AKC)Never leave her alone with small kids

Each “no” then shows where she needs help first. If you’re short on time, ABMC suggests an older puppy or young adult instead.

Why do so many Malinois end up in rescue?

“Far too many Malinois end up in rescue today,” Malinois.UK writes. It blames owners who didn’t research the breed. Many given up for “not coping” are puppies.

A terrible day isn’t a reason to give up. If you’re still struggling after weeks, call her breeder first, since a responsible breeder would take the pup back. Then try the ABMC’s Breed Rescue Program.

How much exercise does a Belgian Malinois puppy need during training?

Less than you’d think. Her bones aren’t fully developed until about 18 months, Malinois.UK says. Walk her about 5 minutes per month of age, so 20 minutes at 4 months. No agility jumps before 12 months.

Fill the gap with brain work: short training, tug, the place cue and sniffing out hidden kibble. Adults need more, and experts split. For example, Purina says two hours or more daily. Malinois.UK says at least an hour, plus training.

Belgian Malinois puppy training FAQ

Malinois vs German Shepherd: how different are they to train?

Different enough that many police handlers needed retraining when they switched from German Shepherds, Malinois.UK says. A Mal is a bit smaller, but very fast and very strong.

Can I own a Malinois puppy if I work full time?

Probably not, Malinois.UK says, unless you can make suitable arrangements. ABMC says successful owners who work eight hours keep their evenings for the dog.

Is a Belgian Malinois a good family dog?

Experts disagree. Malinois.UK says the breed is not an ideal family pet. AKC’s best match is an active family with older, responsible kids.
