Heel Nipping and Nonstop Barking? Corgi Puppy Training

Your corgi puppy herds your ankles, barks at the door and plants her feet on walks. Steps from the AKC, the Pembroke and Cardigan clubs and the ASPCA, plus stairs and weight advice while she grows.

Short answer: Corgi puppy training works best with gentle, reward-based methods and the same rules from everyone. Both corgi breeds were bred to herd cattle. Also, redirect ankle nips to a toy from day one.

Teach a calm “quiet” cue early. Count her treats, because corgis gain weight easily. Teach steps one at a time, and no furniture jumps while she grows.

You walk to the fridge, and a small loaf with ears launches at your heels. Then the doorbell rings and she barks like a much bigger dog. Then she sits on the sidewalk and refuses to move.

Heel nipping is herding behavior. Border collie puppies do it too. A heeler moves cows by nipping at their heels. Left alone, it grows with her, and a bigger herder’s pinch hurts, the Pembroke club warns.

Why is my corgi puppy biting my ankles?

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America (PWCCA) says Pembrokes will happily herd up errant children, especially running ones. In corgi puppy training, correct it consistently from the beginning.

How to stop corgi puppy biting at your heels

  • Carry her favorite tug toy in your pocket.
  • Then stop moving your feet the instant she ambushes. After all, jerking them away invites her to grab.
  • Wave the toy. Walk again once she grabs it.
  • No toy handy? Freeze. When she stops mouthing, praise her and get a toy.
  • Never slap or kick at her. It can make her bite harder, the ASPCA’s mouthing guide warns.
  • Pick games without hands. Fetch and tug beat wrestling.

Tip: Give the herder something to chase that isn’t you. In fact, breeder Anne Bowes says corgis naturally love to fetch.

Do corgis bark a lot? Teaching a corgi puppy “quiet”

Often, yes. The AKC rates Pembroke barking 4 out of 5 and the Cardigan 5, its top “very vocal” mark.

How to teach the quiet cue

The ASPCA’s barking guide has a muzzle-hold version. If that scares her, use its treat version instead.

  • Let her bark three to four times. Then calmly say “Quiet,” without shouting.
  • Feed tiny, pea-sized treats while she stays silent.
  • Over several days, she’ll learn what “Quiet” means.
  • Never reward barking at you while you fix her dinner. So attention, play and treats come only once she’s quiet.

For door barking, practice sit and stay with no one there first. So if you rent and the neighbors have noticed, start this week.

The PWCCA’s FAQ also lists a squirt of water. We’d skip it, since the AKC calls reward-based training best for this sensitive breed. However, if she barks from fear, skip any startle and talk to a qualified trainer.

Are corgis stubborn, or easy to train?

They’re quick learners with opinions. The AKC rates both breeds 4 of 5 for trainability, yet Pembrokes “often have a mind of their own.”

Without work, purpose-bred dogs create their own projects, the AKC says. So build a daily job into corgi puppy training. So how to train a corgi puppy comes down to gentle, reward-based sessions that give her brain a job. Start with sit, stay and heel, then down and off. “Leave it” and “drop it” matter extra, since corgis have a strong jaw grip.

A story from Michael Northcutt, our founder

Halfway down the block on our first real walk, she sat down on the sidewalk and refused to move.

Her bottom was on the concrete. Front legs braced. Meanwhile, a man walking by with a big golden dog chuckled. “Gotta show her who’s boss,” he said.

So I gave the leash a little tug. Instead, she leaned back harder, and her collar slid up around her ears. I stopped pulling right away.

Later, I tried to see it from her side. Cars rushing past. A dog barking behind a fence. She wasn’t being stubborn. She was overwhelmed.

So we started over, smaller. Leash on inside while we played, then the backyard, then the front walk. When she stopped, I gave slack, crouched and said her name happily. Any step toward me got a treat.

Our “walks” were about five minutes long and went maybe three houses. But they were good minutes.

When your corgi plants her feet, check the scene and make the next step smaller. Also, if she limps or seems scared every time, check with your vet.

How to potty train a corgi puppy

“They’re very easy to crate train,” Bowes told the AKC. Corgi puppies may wet the crate, but they rarely poop in it.

The AKC’s normal bladder stretch is about 1 hour per month of age. The outer limit is age in months plus one hour. So a 3 month old corgi’s normal stretch is about 3 hours, 4 at most.

Say a calm “Go potty” when she starts in the right spot, as the AKC suggests. In corgi puppy training, praise and treat the moment she finishes.

Our crate training guide covers the first nights and the crying. Also, if you can’t get home at lunch, the PWCCA suggests a friend or pet sitter for the noon trip.

Corgi puppy stairs, couches and that long back

For corgi puppy training, remember that corgis are true dwarf breeds. The PWCCA calls the Pembroke chondrodysplastic. The Cardigan club says disc disease (IVDD) is known to occur in Cardigans.

  • Pembroke club: You don’t have to carry a Pembroke on stairs. Teach single steps first, and watch open staircases, since some Pems cannot resist jumping.
  • Cardigan club: Never let young puppies jump off furniture or go down large flights. Going downstairs is harder for this long-bodied, short-legged dog.

To pick her up, put one hand under her chest behind the front legs. Then support her hindquarters with the other, the Cardigan club says. For the bed, see our dog stairs for bed guide.

Tip: A baby gate at the top of the stairs stops solo downhill trips. It’s on the PWCCA’s puppy supply list.

Pembroke or Cardigan: does training change?

Not much. The PWCCA says both breeds are intelligent, trainable and good with children.

Corgi food motivation, treats and weight

Food makes corgis easy to train and easy to overfeed.

“They often are too fat and too heavy.”

Anne Bowes, Heronsway Pembroke Welsh Corgis, PWCCA member and 2007 AKC Herding Group Breeder of the Year

The PWCCA calls Pembrokes great con-artists. So don’t believe the begging or the bag’s feeding chart, and skip table scraps. Too many training treats can cause obesity, the AKC adds.

Follow your breeder’s feeding instructions, increasing as she grows, the PWCCA says.

How much should a corgi weigh?

The AKC lists adult Pembroke males at up to 30 pounds, females 28. Meanwhile, Cardigan males run 30 to 38 pounds, and females 25 to 34. If you can’t easily feel her ribs, she’s most likely overweight, the AKC says.

Brushing is corgi puppy training too

Start grooming practice right away. Pembrokes have a double coat and shed daily, the AKC notes. Each spring or summer the undercoat comes out in prodigious amounts, the PWCCA says. A rake also helps strip it out, the AKC’s Pembroke page adds.

The blow dryer’s sound bothers corgis most, Bowes says, so let it run in the room first.

When to call a trainer or your vet

The ASPCA says repeated frustration biting is not something a puppy will simply outgrow. Watch for a stiff body, pulled-back lips, growling or bites that hurt far more than play. So those need a qualified behaviorist or certified trainer.

At the first sign of distress or discomfort, see the vet, the AKC’s Cardigan page says.

Corgi puppy training FAQ

When should I start socializing my corgi puppy?

The AKC timeline starts around eight weeks, so ask your breeder what she has met. Bowes suggests standing with her at a busy park and handing out treats.

Are male or female corgis easier to train?

Neither, says the PWCCA. Males are just as good with children, as easy to housebreak and not more aggressive.
