House Smells Like Dog? 5 Spots to Clean Before Guests Notice

A room-by-room sniff test, what to do when pee has soaked into floors or a mattress, and a weekend plan that fits.

Short answer: Here’s how to get rid of dog smell in house rooms for good. To begin with, find where the smell starts. Then clean in this order: the dog, her bedding, old accident spots, carpet and couch, the air.

Sprays come last. It’s much better to conquer the stink at its source, Consumer Reports advises.

You come home and smell her before she reaches the door. Or a guest pauses in the hallway, and you hadn’t noticed a thing.

Leave the source in place, and the smell keeps coming back. In general, dog smell in the house comes from her coat, skin and ears. It also lives in fabric, floors and old accident spots.

Why does my house smell like dog?

“Dog smells linger because they seep into carpets, fabrics, and even the air.”

Robin Murphy, Chief Cleaning Officer of Maid Brigade, to Apartment Therapy

If your house smells like dog the moment you walk in, start with a sniff test, room by room. Then match what you notice to its likely source.

Tip: Stopped noticing it yourself? In that case, ask a friend without a dog to walk through with you and point. Then get down to her height near beds, rugs and corners.

What if the dog smell in the house survives every wash?

A story from Michael Northcutt, our founder: We’d owned dogs before. That made us too sure of ourselves.

So when a smell survived every wash, we did a lot of explaining. We weren’t watching Cleo.

Before the next try, we checked the basics, her health first. Then Ben picked washable, replaceable things for her. I just watched Cleo.

In the end, the collar turned out to be holding the smell. Cleo didn’t suddenly love the fuss. But she learned we’d notice when she hesitated, and her trust grew.

Cleo’s smell hid in one thing we hadn’t checked. That’s why this guide finds the source before you spray anything.

How to get rid of dog smell in house rooms, step by step

This is how to get dog smell out of house rooms without covering it up. Go in order, since a clean dog on a dirty bed soon smells like the bed.

What you’ll need

  • A pet-specific enzyme cleaner
  • Baking soda
  • A vacuum
  • Paper towels or clean cloths for blotting
  • A fresh HVAC filter

Time: one weekend. Bathe and wash on Saturday, leave baking soda down overnight, then vacuum and air out on Sunday.

Step 1: Start with the dog

Her coat goes everywhere she does, so she comes first. Veterinary dermatologist Dr. Jackie Campbell recommends bathing your dog monthly. Also, dog shampoos often contain lipids and ceramides that help keep skin from drying out.

Clean the dog first, then move on to her bed and blankets.

Between baths, Apartment Therapy’s guide suggests a quick brush and wiping her paws at the door. Our guide on how often you should bathe a puppy covers her first bath, too.

Why does my dog smell so bad?

The AKC names yeast or bacterial infections on the skin or in the ears as the most common medical reasons. In fact, allergies often start it, through scratching and licking. Dogs also carry smells home, like grass from the yard.

Smell her breath too. The AKC says the most common causes of bad breath in dogs are poor oral hygiene and gum disease. However, sweet or urine-like breath means a vet visit.

Watch whether the smell builds. Dermatologist Dr. Ashley Bourgeois treats a rise in odor intensity as meaningful. Smell plus crusting, red skin or bright red ears is abnormal. If you see those signs, then take her to the vet.

Step 2: Wash her bed and blankets

Apartment Therapy’s pros say to wash bedding weekly. Our how to wash a dog bed guide covers the cover, the insert and pee.

How do you get dog smell out of blankets?

Wash them with her bed. For urine smell, also look for an enzymatic laundry product made for it.

If clean loads still smell musty, the washer may be the problem. Our washing machine smell guide checks the seal, drawer and drain filter.

Step 3: Find and treat old accident spots

When you’re working out how to get rid of dog smell in the house, one missed spot behind a chair can keep a room smelling. Dogs sometimes pee in hidden corners. The AKC’s pee cleanup guide points out you can often smell it before you see it.

Check every place she’s had an accident, under furniture and along walls too. Also, a urine stain detector with an LED UV light can show spots that are already dry.

Then treat each one with an enzyme cleaner. These break down the odor-causing parts of pet urine, the Sleep Foundation explains. Our enzyme cleaner for dog urine guide shows how much to use and how long to leave it wet.

Tip: Soak each spot deep enough to reach what soaked in, since a light mist only treats the top. In any case, pick one product per spot and let it work.

How do you get dog pee smell out of the house?

Blot first, then treat with an enzyme cleaner. In fact, the same AKC guide says that order delivers the best results.

  • Carpet and rugs. Blot with clean towels or a wet vacuum. If the smell stays, use an enzymatic cleaner made for pet stains. Urine may have soaked into the padding, so repeat treatments or a professional clean may be needed.
  • Hardwood floors. Move fast, because pee can soak into the wood. Press paper towels on the puddle, swapping fresh ones until it feels dry. Then finish with an enzyme stain remover safe for hardwood. Even so, dried pee in wood may take repeat treatments.
  • Mattress. Strip the bed and wash the sheets right away. Blot, never rub, since rubbing pushes urine deeper. Use a pet-specific enzyme cleaner, following its label.

Then spread a thick layer of baking soda on the mattress, wait at least 8 hours, and vacuum. After that, a waterproof mattress protector helps keep the next accident out. That’s the advice in the Sleep Foundation’s mattress guide.

For a dog poop smell in the house, pick it up first. Then the same enzyme cleaner fits, since enzyme sprays target organic messes and odors.

Step 4: Deodorize the carpet and couch

The Apartment Therapy method is baking soda on carpets and furniture, left overnight, then vacuumed the next day. Between deep cleans, also vacuum and mop regularly, baseboards included.

How do you get dog smell out of a couch?

  • Vacuum first. Then lift each cushion and get into the seams.
  • Baking soda overnight. Vacuum it up the next day.
  • Odor spray between cleans. Odor-neutralizing sprays have ingredients that encapsulate the compounds causing the odor, Emory chemistry professor Bill Wuest, PhD, explains.
  • Cover it if she’s allowed up. A machine-washable couch cover for dogs can go in the weekly wash with her bedding.

If she peed on the couch, however, treat that spot the Step 3 way first.

How do you get dog smell out of carpet?

In short, baking soda overnight handles general dog smell. A pee spot, though, goes back to Step 3, one method per spot.

Consumer Reports also calls a carpet cleaner a worthwhile investment in a home with pets. Our carpet cleaner for dog pee guide covers that choice. Skip the steam cleaner on pee spots, though. Heat can set the stain and odor permanently, the AKC warns.

Step 5: Clear the air last

To get rid of dog smell in the house for good, the air comes last, because it only stays fresh once the sources are gone.

  • Open up for 10 minutes. Open windows or doors on opposite sides of the house.
  • Change the HVAC filter. Pet owners should change it every one to two months.
  • Finally, add a purifier if you want one. Murphy likes one with a carbon filter.

All three come from the same Apartment Therapy guide. Our air purifier for pet hair guide puts washing first and the purifier second.

Even after all five steps, a puppy corner can start to smell again between cleanups.

Which odor eliminators help get rid of dog smell in the house?

So pick each one by where the smell starts.

  • Enzyme cleaner: the pet odor eliminator for accident spots and pee-soaked bedding.
  • Odor-neutralizing spray: for fabric between cleanings. It doesn’t remove an accident underneath.
  • Carbon-filter purifier: a house odor eliminator for the air, once the sources are clean.
  • Air freshener: skip it. Your nose may get a temporary reprieve while the source stays put.

Does baking soda get rid of dog smell in the house?

It helps on carpet and furniture when you give it a night. Murphy credits it as a natural odor neutralizer, and the AKC calls it useful for mild to moderate odors. Still, a soaked-in pee spot needs the enzyme cleaner first.

Vinegar or enzyme cleaner for dog smell in the house?

Apartment Therapy and the AKC both mix vinegar half and half with water. However, the Sleep Foundation warns that its strong smell can lead some pets to mark the spot again. So on a known accident, use the enzyme cleaner only. So save the vinegar mist for fabric with no accident under it.

With a puppy, how do you stop the next accident from adding to the smell?

With a young puppy, accidents can be the main source, so stopping them is part of how to get rid of dog smell in house rooms. After all, every puddle you prevent is one less spot to hunt for.

Our how to potty train a puppy guide covers the trips and the schedule. Our free Potty Break Timer takes her age and her last trip. It then shows her next trip time and the longest she can hold it.

When several people share her trips, a missed trip is easy, and so is a puddle nobody saw.

Dog smell in house FAQ
