Short answer: The top chew proof dog bed in Whole Dog Journal’s hands-on test is the K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Armored Elevated Bed. Also, an aluminum frame and a taut sling leave her little to grab. For a big dog, however, Kuranda’s aluminum bed with heavy duty vinyl is the maker’s own pick for destructive chewers.
Still, no bed is truly chew proof, and the makers admit it. If she only destroys things when you’re gone, fix the cause before you spend more.
You come home to white fluff across the living room. The bed you bought last month is an empty cover, and she’s wagging in the middle of it.
The money stings, but the stuffing worries you more. After all, if swallowed bedding blocks her gut, surgical removal is the only treatment, in VCA’s guidance. So pick the bed by how she chews, and read the warranty before you pay.

The six chew proof dog beds, one by one
Two hands-on tests also back these picks: Jae Thomas, CPDT-KA, for Whole Dog Journal, and Tara Lynn’s team at Spots.com.
K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Armored Elevated Bed: for the determined chewer
An aluminum frame with reinforced corners holds a waterproof ballistic sling. It came out on top in Whole Dog Journal’s test. Also, in a Malamute breeder’s kennels, they showed minimal to no wear after months.
“It’s about as chew-proof as dog beds come”
Jae Thomas, CPDT-KA, certified dog trainer, testing for Whole Dog Journal
Best for: a dog who has already gutted a soft bed.
Tested by: Whole Dog Journal.
Watch out for: no cushion, just a sling with a little give.
Chew warranty: 1 year on K9’s warranty page; 120 days on its Amazon listing.
Sold by: K9 Ballistics, on Amazon.

Kuranda Chewproof Aluminum Bed: for a big dog who eats fabric
Kuranda also tucks the fabric edges inside its frame rails, out of reach. For the most destructive dogs, it instead points to aluminum with 40 oz Heavy Duty vinyl.
Spots.com rated the PVC version 9/10, its best overall. However, Kuranda now calls PVC moderately chew resistant.
Best for: a large dog who has shredded padded beds.
Tested by: Spots.com, PVC version only.
Watch out for: on the PVC version, Spots.com noted it isn’t warm, feels harder and needs some assembly. Vinyl can be punctured.
Chew warranty: 1 year on the frame and the vinyl, digging and scratching included.
Sold by: Kuranda Pet Beds, on Amazon.

Gorilla Ballistic Orthopedic Bed: comfort for a moderate chewer
Spots.com’s small but determined chewer went after this bed for more than a week without ripping a hole. Gorilla triple stitches its ballistic covers over CertiPUR-US certified foam, and the covers also machine wash.
Best for: a dog who needs a real mattress and chews now and then.
Tested by: Spots.com.
Watch out for: the Velcro cover can be chewed. But the foam isn’t washable, and the chew warranty skips it.
Chew warranty: 125 days, one replacement cover.
Sold by: Gorilla Dog Beds directly, not linked here.
Orvis RecoveryZone ToughChew Couch: support for a light chewer
Firm foam inserts sit in a tightly woven, machine washable cover. In fact, Whole Dog Journal named it the most comfortable bed for chewers.
Best for: a small dog or a moderate chewer who needs firm support.
Tested by: Whole Dog Journal.
Watch out for: it got three paws, not four, because some owners said persistent dogs chewed through.
Chew warranty: lifetime, as Whole Dog Journal reports it.
Sold by: Orvis, not linked here.
K9 Ballistics Tough Round Pillow Bed: for the nester who chews corners
No corners means fewer targets. A ripstop ballistic cover zips over shredded foam and also comes off for the washer. Spots.com scored it 7/10, more chew resistant than chew proof.
Best for: a dog who digs, nests and nibbles.
Tested by: Spots.com.
Watch out for: K9 Ballistics calls it not a chew proof bed, and not for persistent chewers left alone.
Chew warranty: 1 year, cover only, on K9’s warranty page.
Sold by: K9 Ballistics, on Amazon.

Coolaroo Original Elevated Bed: the budget cot
A steel frame holds breathable HDPE fabric you can hose off or wipe clean. It was Spots.com’s budget pick.
Best for: a dog who’s rough on beds but doesn’t eat them.
Tested by: Spots.com.
Watch out for: it may sag in the middle, especially under bigger dogs. Still, Spots.com says it isn’t built for chewers.
Chew warranty: none.
Sold by: Amazon.com.

Can a chewer have an orthopedic dog bed?
Yes, if she chews lightly, so the Gorilla or Orvis fits. For a dog who rips foam or eats stuffing, however, Whole Dog Journal’s tester would skip padding entirely. A raised cot still gets her joints off the floor.

A story from Michael Northcutt, our founder: With Milo, it was the doorframe. I still picture his leash by the front door, untouched. The damage only happened while we were out.
We had called his hesitation stubbornness, because that made the problem feel easier to control. Then we called the vet and a qualified behavior professional.
The professional asked when it started, about pain, the setting and his recovery. We had kept notes, so we answered with facts. In the end, a secure visual barrier and clear instructions helped. So did everyone in the house giving Milo the same answer.
Milo’s target was a doorframe. If your dog’s bed only gets wrecked while you’re out, look at her alone time before buying a tougher bed.
Is any dog bed truly chew proof?
No. In fact, Kuranda admits a persistent dog can beat any bed built to be comfortable. In other words, most beds sold as chew proof are really chew resistant, in Spots.com’s words. Shop for an indestructible dog bed, and the best you’ll find gives her teeth little to start on.
- Seams and fabric edges. They give teeth something to grab. For example, cots hide the edges inside the frame.
- Corners. Both aluminum cots also tuck theirs into the frame. Round beds have none.
- Closures. In contrast, a Velcro flap is one more thing to grab.
For the crate floor, see our chew proof crate pad guide.
What does a chew proof warranty really cover?
Usually one replacement, inside a set window. So check the length, and what gets replaced.
Source: the Kuranda, K9 Ballistics and Gorilla warranty pages and the K9 Amazon listing, read October 2026. Coolaroo: no chew warranty (Spots.com). Orvis: lifetime (Whole Dog Journal).
K9’s own site says a year, but its Amazon listing says 120 days.
- One claim only. Each maker replaces once (Kuranda, once per part).
- Cover or whole bed. K9 replaces a whole Armored cot, but only the cover of its pillow beds. Gorilla instead sends one cover and leaves out the mattress.
- No refunds. K9 and Gorilla replace, and K9 offers store credit instead. Neither refunds.
- Where you bought it. K9 covers Amazon orders when K9 is the seller, not other resellers. Meanwhile, Kuranda sends marketplace claims back to that store.
- Photos. Also, Kuranda and K9 want a photo of the damage, not the bed shipped back.
Do the math before you pay. For example, a 125-day window that starts at 4 months old ends near 8 months. Puppies and adolescents can chew to explore for as long as two years.
Tip: The day the bed arrives, screenshot the listing’s warranty line, then save the order number. Write the delivery date on the bed’s tag, so the deadline isn’t a guess.
Why does my dog destroy her bed?
Chewing is normal. For one thing, it eases the pain of incoming teeth, fights boredom and can relieve mild anxiety or frustration, the ASPCA explains. For adult dogs, Whole Dog Journal also adds a stressful change at home or a medical reason.
| What you see | Likely reason | Do this first | Bed that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| A puppy chewing anything, home or not | Teething and exploring | Supervise, and trade the bed for a chew | A cot with nothing inside |
| Chewing after a quiet day indoors | Boredom | A play session and new chews | Any cot, or a tough pillow bed |
| Damage only while you’re out, with whining or pacing | Possible separation anxiety | Talk to your vet or a qualified behavior pro | The bed won’t fix it |
| A sudden change in an adult dog | Stress or a medical reason | Book a vet visit | No bedding while you find out |
Is there a chew proof dog bed for puppies?
For a teething puppy, the safest bed is often no bed while you’re away. Whole Dog Journal suggests bedding only under supervision, so she can’t swallow fabric. In general, the intense chewing phase usually ends by six months of age, by the ASPCA’s timeline.
Tip: Until about six months, choose a bare cot over a plush bed, with her own chew toys in reach.
See our teething puppy chew toys picks, and puppy chewing for the wider habit. For naps, see our puppy schedule by age.
Does she only chew when you’re gone?
Then look at separation anxiety. Some dogs with it chew door frames or window sills. Also, that damage rarely happens with the owner home. These dogs also show signs like whining, barking, pacing or accidents.
On the other hand, many young dogs chew whether you’re home or not, and a bored dog can wreck things without seeming anxious.
- Mild cases: counterconditioning may help.
- Moderate or severe cases: a step-by-step desensitization and counterconditioning program.
- Who to call: a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist, or a trainer experienced in treating fear.
Of course, a crate calms some dogs and stresses others. If the crate upsets her, then read dog anxiety in the crate. Never punish her after the fact, since she can’t link it to what she chewed.
For a puppy past 16 weeks, however, alone time needs practice.
What if she ate some of the stuffing?
Remove the bed and watch her. Foreign body obstruction is one of the more common and potentially life-threatening problems vets see. Call your vet if you notice:
- Vomiting, diarrhea or a sore belly
- Less interest in food, or low energy
- Straining to poop
- Growling or biting when you touch her belly
Don’t wait it out. A blockage can cut off blood supply, and tissue may die if that lasts more than a few hours.

Chew proof dog bed FAQ
Can a chew proof dog bed go outside?
Some can. Whole Dog Journal’s tester saw K9 Ballistics cots hold up to rain and hosing in outdoor kennels. Coolaroo sells its cot for indoor or outdoor use.
Which chew proof dog bed is best for large dogs?
Kuranda’s listing rates its aluminum bed for dogs up to 250 lbs. The K9 Armored listing gives its frame the same limit.
Does bitter apple spray stop a dog chewing her bed?
It may help some adult dogs. K9 Ballistics suggests a bitter apple or bitter cherry spray for adults who still chew. For chewing only while you’re out, start with the separation anxiety steps above.
How we chose: In October 2026 we read two bed tests and the Amazon listings. We also read three warranty pages, Kuranda’s buyer’s guide, and ASPCA and VCA guidance. We did not test these beds. Nobody at LoveMyPuppy is a veterinarian.
