You want somewhere soft to sprawl on the floor. Maybe it’s for reading, gaming, a nap with your dog, or a friend who stays over.

A couch is too short and the carpet is too hard. That’s the gap a dog bed for humans fills. Here’s what’s worth buying, and what to skip.

Who this is for: adults who want a big floor bed, including new puppy owners stuck by the crate.

What is a human dog bed?

A human dog bed is an oversized plush floor bed shaped like a dog’s bolster bed, sized for an adult. Most have a foam base inside a faux fur cover, with a raised rim.

People also call it a human size dog bed or a giant dog bed for humans. CNET describes the idea as somewhere between a bean bag chair, a hammock and a plush bed.

The best known is the Plufl, the original premium bed that both WIRED and CNET reviewed. CNET even suggests it as a spare bed for a not-so-tall houseguest. Its larger XXL size could work as a guest bed in a pinch, CNET says.

They are heavy and bulky, though. CNET’s editor called the Plufl fairly heavy at 25 pounds. He said its one glaring problem was where to put it, since it didn’t suit his farmhouse decor. Measure your floor before you order.

Memory foam vs egg crate foam: what’s inside?

Listings use both terms. EHEYCIGA says its base is egg crate memory foam. JOLLYVOGUE lists egg crate foam, and the Bedsure title says egg foam. WROS describes high-density memory foam.

The Plufl uses a memory foam base, per WIRED. WIRED adds that its foam is CertiPUR certified and the bed is Oeko-Tex certified.

Bedsure’s listing states CertiPUR-US certified foam and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 fabric. Amazon also shows an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 badge on the EHEYCIGA.

Several of these beds are marketed as orthopedic. That is the seller’s word, not a health claim we can back.

Which human dog beds are worth buying?

These four run from budget to upper mid-range, and the Plufl is the premium original. We chose them from live listing specs and repeated owner complaints, not hands-on tests.

Plufl: the original (premium)

WIRED rated it 9 out of 10 and called it very expensive. It is 68 inches long and 33 inches wide. Neither the 5 foot 7 reviewer nor her 6 foot 2 husband could stretch out straight. The cover is washable, and a Velcro strap folds it in half.

Is a human dog bed worth it versus a bean bag?

It depends on how you rest. A human dog bed suits lying down and curling up, but WIRED found it hard to sit up in.

What you gain:

  • You lie at floor level with bolsters around you. WIRED found them supportive enough for your head without a pillow.
  • All five covers here come off for washing.
  • Some fold for storage, like the EHEYCIGA and the Plufl.

What you give up:

  • WIRED lists no back support for sitting up. Its reviewer propped herself up with a stiff pillow.
  • They are heavy. These listings give 17.65 to 25.6 pounds.
  • They take up a lot of floor space, another downside WIRED names.

If you mostly sit up to read or game, a bean bag may suit you better. We did not compare bean bags side by side.

How long does a new human dog bed take to expand?

Check your listing, because most of these give no time. For the Plufl, the brand recommends 24 hours, according to WIRED.

WIRED’s reviewer waited a little less than a workday, and the bed was fine. EHEYCIGA says to open the vacuum bag and let the bed unfold. Then pat and shake it until it’s fully fluffy.

The Bedsure, WROS and JOLLYVOGUE listings don’t state an expansion time. Check the listing or ask the seller before you plan a first nap.

If the new foam smells when you unpack it, let it air out in a ventilated room. None of these listings mentions odor either way.

What do owners complain about with human dog beds?

Four complaints come up again and again in low-star reviews of these beds. Faux fur sheds, liners run small, thin fabric shows the foam, and the beds feel warm.

  • The faux fur sheds and goes bald. Wash the cover gently and skip high heat. Expect some fluff loss either way.
  • The included liner is too small. Treat any liner as a bonus. Don’t count on it to protect the foam.
  • You can feel the foam through cheap fabric. A thicker cover and a solid rim usually feel better.
  • It holds heat. Plush fur traps warmth, so warm sleepers may want a thin sheet on top.

Dog fur adds to the mess, because plush faux fur holds on to loose hair.

Using a human dog bed with a new puppy

Use it as your spot beside the crate, not your puppy’s bed. During potty training, soft bedding invites accidents and chewing.

Is it useful during crate training?

Humane World for Animals suggests you sit quietly near the crate for five to 10 minutes during practice. For nights, it suggests a crate in your bedroom or a nearby hallway, especially with a puppy.

The AKC asked trainer Rachel Lane, M.Sc., CPDT-KA, how to help a puppy who won’t go in. Her advice puts you right on the floor.

“Start by sitting next to their crate and tossing treats in without closing the door.”

Rachel Lane, M.Sc., CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, quoted by the American Kennel Club
From my own first night (Michael’s story): Our first puppy stayed quiet for twelve minutes after the lights went out. Then a thin, high cry came through the wall. We had a crate, a soft bed and a fluffy blanket that cost more than any blanket should. What we didn’t have was a plan. I sat on the cold floor in my socks, two fingers through the wire, until a little after three. The next day we moved the crate right next to the bed. I taped an index card to the top: Out. Potty. Back. Quiet. Night two wasn’t silent, but it was shorter for all of us.

A comfy floor bed makes those hours kinder on your back. It won’t stop the crying on its own. The plan does that.

Can my puppy share the bed?

Later, yes. The AKC warns that many puppies prefer to go potty on soft, porous surfaces like beds and blankets. A giant plush bed is the softest surface in the house.

Naps matter too. The AKC lists after naps as a time to take a young puppy out. So when you both wake up, go straight outside.

If you might doze off, put your puppy in the crate or pen first. The AKC notes a crate when you can’t supervise helps prevent chewing. Zippers, foam and fur are easy to chew.

Sharing with a big dog

None of the four listings gives a weight limit for a person plus a dog. Bedsure and EHEYCIGA say you and your pet can rest on it together.

Our picks run 44 to 45 inches wide, and the Plufl is 33 inches wide, per WIRED. With a large dog, measure you both lying down before you buy.

Should you sleep on the floor with a new puppy?

Advice differs. Humane World for Animals suggests keeping a puppy’s crate in your bedroom or a nearby hallway at first. That way you hear when your puppy needs out.

A floor bed by the crate is fine for a few nights. Long term, most families move back to their own bed with the crate beside it.

Want your puppy on the couch instead? See couch covers for dogs first, or how to keep your puppy off the couch.

How do you wash a human dog bed?

Unzip the cover, take out the foam and any loose filling, then machine wash the cover on low heat. Air dry it unless the label allows a cool dryer.

  1. Shake or vacuum off loose fur outside first.
  2. Pull out the base foam and the bolster filling.
  3. Wash the cover on a gentle, low heat cycle.
  4. Air dry it flat, then zip the foam back in.

JOLLYVOGUE says to use cold water and skip bleach and fabric softener. Always follow your own bed’s label.

For pee smells, follow our full guide to washing a dog bed. A big fur cover also leaves hair and odor in your washer. A monthly clean with washer cleaner tablets keeps that smell out of your towels.

When should you call a vet or trainer?

Call your vet right away if your puppy swallows foam, fabric or a zipper pull. Call a trainer or your vet if crate time brings real panic, not just fussing.

The AKC lists signs of crate stress: pacing, shaking, scratching or biting at the door, long howling, or drooling. If you see those, slow down and get help.

What should you check before you order?

Measure your floor, check your height against the bed’s length, and confirm the cover comes off. Then read the one-star reviews.

  • Floor space measured, plus a clear path around it
  • Bed length longer than you are tall
  • Removable, machine-washable cover
  • Washing rules for the foam and filling read
  • Expansion time on the listing noted
  • Return window noted and packaging kept
