Smell Keeps Coming Back? Best Carpet Cleaner for Dog Pee

Five cleaners for dog pee on carpet, four with published tests behind them. Plus why the odor wicks back up from the pad and when to call a pro.

Short answer: The right carpet cleaner for dog pee depends on the stain’s age. Either way, soak well past the edge so the smell can’t return. On a fresh puddle, blot, then use an enzyme spray like Puracy. On a dried spot, however, Folex is the tested pick.

For many spots or a whole rug, use a carpet machine with a urine formula. The Bissell Little Green Cordless handles spots, while the Bissell TurboClean upright handles a small room with several spots.

You cleaned that spot on the rug on Sunday. Still, by Wednesday she’s squatting on it again, and the smell is back too.

Urine spreads under carpet to an area 5 to 10 times larger than the spot you see, per BISSELL’s chemists. So if you clean only the mark, the rest stays down there.

Which carpet cleaner for dog pee has a test behind it?

Four of these five pet urine carpet cleaners have a published hands-on test behind them. Three are Bissell, and only the Oxy formula has no test. Bissell doesn’t pay us. You can also find more enzyme sprays in our enzyme cleaner guide for dog urine.

Puracy Pet Stain and Odor Remover: the fresh puddle spray

It’s Family Handyman’s best natural pick. Its tester used it on new and old pet accidents and found it works best on carpet and fabric. Let it sit at least 15 minutes on new messes. Old ones, however, need an hour, or overnight.

Good for: a puddle you caught today.
Watch out for: it left a sticky film on her hardwood that lasted days.

Folex Carpet Spot Remover: the dried stain pick

It’s Family Handyman’s pick for old carpet stains. For example, a pee stain a few days old was gone one day after spraying. It left no white mark.

The listing promises no waiting and no vacuuming. Still, the tester found it doesn’t work on fresh stains, and vacuuming an hour later helped.

Good for: the dry spot you found behind the couch.
Watch out for: it can lighten some fabrics, so test a hidden patch first.

Bissell Pet Pro Oxy Urine Eliminator: a carpet cleaner solution for pet urine

The listing says it breaks down urine, vomit and mud stains, with a Febreze scent. We found no independent test, so this pick rests on paper.

Good for: owners who already have a carpet machine or shampooer.
Watch out for: it’s made for upright machines. Instead, Bissell sells a separate formula for portables.

Bissell Little Green Cordless: the spot machine

Reader’s Digest tested it on set and new stains, including yellow-dyed ammonia. In the end, it took two to three rounds on Turbo Mode to clear every stain and odor.

However, its long-term tester used vinegar and water in it, which BISSELL’s chemists advise against.

Good for: stairs, rugs, upholstery and one spot at a time.
Watch out for: the hose dripped dirty water on the tester’s hands.

Bissell TurboClean: the small room machine

Consumer Analysis ran 16 carpet cleaners through a stain test. The TurboClean cleared the urine stain in one back and forth pass. Most machines needed two, so that made it Consumer Analysis’s best affordable carpet cleaner for pets. Its review gives no model number. Also, our link goes to a TurboClean sold with an Oxy formula, which may not be the unit they tested.

Source: Consumer Analysis stain test of 16 carpet cleaners. In this case, the stain was coyote urine, left to dry 24 hours.

Overall, on that one-day-old stain, most machines cleared the urine in one or two passes.

Good for: several spots across one small room.
Watch out for: small tanks, no hose for spot tools, and it leaves carpet wetter than most.

A story from Michael Northcutt, our founder: We almost lost a rental deposit once. At move-out, I found the damage our dog Nell had left behind.

At first, I grabbed a quick-fix product. It went back to the store. Before buying anything else, we took dated photos of the place with what we already owned.

Then I skipped the glowing reviews and read the lowest ones. They kept naming the same two problems: poor fit and trapped odor.

Now I ask one question before I buy anything for Nell. Does it make her life safer, more comfortable or clearer? If not, the packaging doesn’t matter.

Trapped odor is the complaint to fear on carpet, too. Clean so the smell is really gone, not covered.

Which carpet cleaner for dog pee works on which stain?

Don’t scrub, because that spreads urine deeper into the carpet backing. If you can smell it but can’t see it, wait for dark. Then, with the lights off, dried urine glows under a black light.

Lights off and a black light help you find the spots you missed.

Tip: Count the spots before you buy. For example, one or two fit a spray or a portable. A whole room of them, though, is upright machine work.

Why does the dog pee smell come back?

Urine holds uric acid, which breaks down into mercaptans and ammonia compounds. Mercaptans are sulfur compounds, the kind in skunk spray. Bacteria then feed on the urine and add to the odor.

In fact, the spot you see is the small part. That’s because urine soaks into the carpet pad and can reach the subfloor below. Treat only the mark, and the fibers then act like a candle wick, pulling stain and odor back up.

So use enough cleaner to cover the stain and the ring around it. For example, enzyme sprays break down the organic compounds in urine. Oxy formulas, on the other hand, use hydrogen peroxide to break the bonds that cause the odor.

How do you get old dog urine out of carpet?

Old spots need more product, spread wider than the mark. So BISSELL suggests a portable machine with an Oxy or enzyme formula to reach odor in the backing. Let it dry and check again. If the smell stays, re-treat down to the pad, since more urine is probably hidden below.

Of course, odor outside the carpet needs its own plan. Our guide on how to get rid of dog smell in the house covers the rest of the room.

Why does she keep peeing on the same carpet spot?

She can still smell it. Dogs frequently return to areas that still smell like previous accidents, the AKC says. So clean the hidden spots too.

Our guide on how to potty train a puppy covers the timing side, too. Not sure when she’s due next? Our free Potty Break Timer takes her age and last trip. It then shows her next trip time, her hard limit and a countdown.

Also, if a trained dog starts making new spots, ask your vet. The AKC adds that persistent house soiling may signal a medical problem.

In short, cleaning fixes the spot she already made. The next one, though, depends on getting her out in time.

How do you clean dog pee out of carpet with a machine?

BISSELL gives five steps for a carpet machine.

  1. Fill the tank. Use a formula made for pet urine.
  2. Spot clean the area. Cover the spot plus two inches around it. Go forward with the sprayer on, then back with it off. Repeat two or three times.
  3. Extract. Then use suction alone to pull up as much water as you can.
  4. Repeat if needed. Stubborn spots may take several rounds.
  5. Dry overnight. Open windows or run a fan to speed it up.

Skip home mixes in the tank. Vinegar can corrode a BISSELL machine, and its chemist doubts plain peroxide too.

“Hydrogen peroxide alone will not do an adequate job.”

Steam or hot water? Family Handyman warns against steam on urine, because heat can set the stain and odor. For a Bissell carpet cleaner, however, Reader’s Digest recommends hot tap water. So keep steam off pee, and follow your machine’s manual on water.

Tip: Puppy pee on carpeted stairs took a Reader’s Digest tester about half an hour with a portable. Then drying can take up to a full day.

What about a rug cleaner for dog urine?

Any rug cleaner for dog pee follows the same steps, with one check first. Read the cleaning tag. BISSELL’s machines and formulas are for carpets tagged “W” or “W/S”. The label on OxiClean’s carpet pet stain remover goes further and rules out wool, leather and silk. If the tag is missing or shows another code, ask the maker before you wet it.

Once the carpet is clean, also think about the corner where she spends her day.

Carpet cleaner for dog pee FAQ

Will dog pee smell go away on its own?

No. BISSELL’s chemists say the odor could get worse as the urine breaks down. The sooner you clean, the better.

Does a homemade carpet cleaner for dog pee, like vinegar and baking soda, work?

Not well, by BISSELL’s account. Its chemist says vinegar doesn’t lift stains or sanitize like a made-for-purpose formula. Baking soda for dog urine smell is a common tip, but urine odors can’t be lessened that way.

Can I use hydrogen peroxide on dog pee in carpet?

Not on its own. BISSELL’s peroxide formulas add cleaning boosters and wetting agents so the peroxide can reach the soil. Peroxide can also bleach or discolor some fibers, so test a hidden patch first.

Are these cleaners safe around my puppy?

Family Handyman lists both Puracy and Folex as safe for kids and pets. Folex adds “when used as directed,” so follow each label. After a machine clean, Reader’s Digest’s rule of thumb is four to six hours before walking on it.

Do I need to replace the carpet pad?

Not always. Re-treat down to the backing or pad first, covering the area around the stain. If odors persist after that, mold or a problem in the padding may be the cause. A professional cleaner can check whether it needs replacing.

How we chose: In October 2026 we read the Family Handyman, Reader’s Digest and Consumer Analysis tests. We also read BISSELL’s urine guide, the AKC’s housetraining guide and each Amazon listing. We did not test these cleaners ourselves. Nobody at LoveMyPuppy is a veterinarian.
