Short answer: A sewer smell near your washer may come from its drain, trap, vent or residue inside the machine.
Persistent smells need a plumber’s assessment. Washer tablets cannot repair a plumbing fault.
Strong odor, illness or a possible gas leak? Take everyone, including pets, outside immediately.
Avoid flames, switches and appliances. Call your gas utility or emergency services from a safe location outside.
Do not sniff drains or investigate a strong odor. Health guidance recommends evacuation for suspected high concentrations.
The washer hits its drain cycle, and the basement laundry room smells like a porta-potty. You’ve wiped the gasket, run the clean cycle, bought the tablets. The drum smells fine. The room doesn’t.
A clean-smelling drum does not prove the drain is responsible. Several appliance and plumbing problems can produce similar odors.
For a mild recurring odor, note when it happens and whether nearby drains gurgle or back up. Give those details to a plumber.

Is the sewer smell from the washer or the drain?
Bacteria inside a dirty washer can smell like rotten eggs. In-House Plumbing calls that the most likely cause of a rotten egg smell. If the smell lives in the drum or door seal, read our washer smells like rotten eggs guide instead.
If you’ve cleaned the machine and the sewage smell stays, it might be coming from the sewer. The gas rises through the standpipe, the open vertical pipe your drain hose hooks into. Mildew and sour-clothes smells are in our washing machine smells guide.
What can you check safely before calling a plumber?
Only check when there is no strong odor, illness or suspected gas leak. Keep children and pets away.
- Note whether the odor appears during draining or while the washer is idle.
- Look for visible leaks or standing water without moving the appliance.
- Check your manual for drain-hose placement. Do not disconnect or alter plumbing to investigate.
- An accessible, rarely used floor drain may have a dry trap. Follow building maintenance guidance for adding water.
- Stop if water backs up. Recurring odor, gurgling or drainage trouble needs a plumber.
Do not climb onto the roof, use chemical drain cleaner or ask someone to sniff the pipe.
What does the timing of the sewer smell tell you?
| When you smell it | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Only when the washer drains | Partial clog of lint and hair, or a blocked vent | Listen for gurgling. Plumber clears the line or the vent. |
| All the time, strongest at the standpipe | Dry or badly installed P-trap | Ask a plumber to check the trap seal and installation. |
| Only after a week away, or a rarely used laundry room | Trap water evaporated | Ask building maintenance about refilling the accessible trap and preventing recurrence. |
| Only in the room, washer smells fine | Another dry drain, or a cracked drain or vent pipe | Run water in every drain. Plumber smoke tests the vents. |
How do the P-trap and standpipe keep sewer gas out?
Every drain has a U-shaped trap that holds water. That water serves as a barrier preventing sewer gasses from leaking into your house. Most intruding sewer gas comes from traps that have gone dry, InterNACHI says. Dry weather and infrequent use can speed the evaporation.
“Methane is the largest single constituent of sewer gas.”
Nick Gromicko, CMI, Certified Master Inspector, writing for InterNACHI
Engineer Fix’s summary of the plumbing codes says a standpipe over 42 inches can strain the washer’s pump.
Standpipe dimensions depend on the appliance instructions and local plumbing rules. Have a plumber check the installation.
What are the signs of a blocked vent pipe?
The standpipe’s vent lets air in and lets gases escape through the roof. When it clogs, sewer gasses have nowhere to go but back into your home. Without that air, a washer’s rush of water will pull the water out of the P-trap.
Gurgling from drains with full P-traps means the vent is likely blocked, Mr. Rooter says.
What is an air admittance valve, and how does one fail?
Some laundry drains have no pipe to the roof. They use an air admittance valve, often sold as a Studor vent, on a short riser by the standpipe. Look for it in a wall box or behind an access panel.
It’s a one-way valve. The rush of draining water lifts its seal to let air in, Engineer Fix explains. Then gravity drops it shut to block sewer gas.
- Sewer smell at the laundry drain. The valve is likely stuck open, with a fouled, cracked or misaligned diaphragm.
- Loud gurgling or very slow draining. The valve is likely stuck closed, so no air gets in.
A plumber should confirm whether the valve has failed and whether replacement meets local requirements. Renters should contact building management.
Can lint and pet hair clog the washer drain?
Lint, hair, soap or dirt can create a partial stoppage. Then bacteria grows on the stoppage and you have a sewer smell. Crate pads and blankets shed fur in the wash, and it heads for the drain. Our how to clean a washing machine guide covers getting fur off dry and clearing the filter.
Fur all over the bedding before it hits the washer? Our free Pet Hair Removal Finder asks three questions about the surface and suggests a type of remover. No sign-up.
Tip: Shake puppy beds and pads outside, over the trash, before the wash. Fur that leaves dry never reaches the drain.
Why does my laundry room smell like sewer when the washer is clean?
The room’s other drains can leak the same gas. InterNACHI points to floor drains near water heaters or furnaces, and seldom-used drains in workshops and mechanical rooms. Mr. Rooter says to run water in every drain weekly, including the utility sink.
Smell it only on the first load after a few idle days? A poster on an inspectors’ forum described that, with the odor at the floor drain. One reply suggested a smoke test. Another pointed at stagnant water left inside the washer.
Renting? Tell building management when the odor appears and whether drains gurgle or back up. Strong odors require immediate action.
A story from Michael Northcutt, our founder: At 9:45 p.m., there was a soft knock on my door. It was the man who lives below me, in his pajamas.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “But is someone running up there? It sounds like a bowling ball.”
It was our puppy. Every night after dinner, she tore around the apartment on bare wood floors.
That week, I put down washable rugs with grip pads underneath. It didn’t stop the running, but it made it a lot quieter. I moved her big play time earlier, around six. I made the hour after nine our quiet hour. A sticky note on my fridge said, “9 p.m. Quiet hour. Chew, not chase.”
A couple weeks later, I knocked on his door with a box of cookies. “Much better,” he said. “I barely hear her now.”
Shared floors with a neighbor come with shared drains. In an apartment, your drain is the building’s drain. Write down the date and what you smell, and tell the landlord the same week.
Washer sewer smell with a septic tank
On septic, every load lands in your own tank. The EPA says doing all household laundry in one day can harm the system. The tank gets too little time to treat waste, and the drainfield could flood. Spread the puppy bedding loads across the week.
A tank that’s due is the next suspect. Household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years, and the system inspected at least every three. InterNACHI also lists diffusion from a leach field septic system as a way sewer gas gets indoors.
Is sewer gas from a washer drain dangerous?
It can be. Headache, dizziness, nausea or drowsiness may accompany exposure. Odor strength cannot measure whether the air is safe.
Leave immediately if the smell is strong, someone feels ill or a gas leak is possible. Bring pets with you.
Call emergency services or the gas utility from outside. Seek medical advice after suspected exposure.
Gas safety guidance says to avoid switches, appliances, flames and phones near a suspected leak.
Should you fix a sewer smell yourself or call a plumber?
Call a plumber for recurring smells, slow drainage, gurgling, leaks or backups. Renters should report these symptoms to building management.
Leave roof vents, drain snakes, smoke tests and pipe alterations to qualified professionals. Ask for a written diagnosis and quote.
A washer cleaner belongs only in a compatible empty machine. It does not fix a trap, vent or sewer line.
Washer sewer smell FAQ
Could the sewer smell at my washer be a gas leak?
Yes. Leave with everyone and all pets if you suspect a gas leak. Avoid switches, appliances and flames.
Call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not investigate the source yourself.
What is a trap primer, and do I need one?
InterNACHI says automatic drain-trap primers deliver a small amount of water to the trap periodically. If weekly water works, you don’t need one.
Can a plumbing vent freeze shut in winter?
Yes. Mr. Rooter says snow and ice buildup on the roof can seal the vent opening and trap gas inside the system. Gurgling after a cold snap points to the vent.
